Flooding in Bihar, India
Struggling to cross flood water in Bihar

More than 2.5 million people have been affected by the recent floods in Bihar, India. It's feared that thousands have died.

The heavy rain associated with the annual monsoon has caused the river Kosi to change course. This means that areas not normally vulnerable to flooding have been struggling to cope with the deluge.

This teaching topic on disasters focuses on floods and includes a case study from India (based on the 2007 floods). It explores stories located on the Global Gang website and provides cross-curricular activities that will help your class understand why disasters happen, what their impact is, and how poor communities can prepare for them.

We'd also like to encourage an active response to hearing news about the flooding. You and your class can make a donation to our appeal fund to help people who are working in the area to help families cope.
