Key question
How are we different and equal?
Learning objectives
Through this unit, students learn to:
• recognise and appreciate difference
• recognise what we have in common
• consider how different faiths believe all people are equal
• reflect on actions which result from believing that all people are equal.
Activities
Ask students to:
• in circle time, discuss what makes every person special. Each child should describe something particular about themselves (inner and outer characteristics)
• paint a self-portrait (face only) and make a display
• cut out shapes of their hands and make fingerprints on them. Display the hands in a circle
• read and discuss All the Colours of the Earth (see below for details)
• listen to the parable of the lost sheep. Discuss Christian belief about the value of each person to God and how this means all are equal
• enact the Sikh langar, with children preparing a meal suitable for all and serving each other. Discuss, including people from all places, cultures and beliefs
• think of and carry out actions to show that all people are equal, such as sitting on the floor together, a dance or sharing gifts.
