Key question

How much do someone's clothes tell you about them?

Learning objectives

Through this unit, students learn to:

• look at messages communicated by badges and uniforms, and their limitations

• recognise the 'uniforms' used by religious leaders

• understand that they themselves may often be identified by the clothes they wear

• apply the knowledge and understanding of what they have learnt to new contexts.

Activities

Ask students to:

• look at the variety of badges and uniforms they wear, and talk about their significance

• look at a clerical shirt or other item of religious dress, and discuss who might wear it

• organise a visit from a local religious leader, and to ask appropriate, prepared questions about their work

• look at images of other religious leaders, and ask the same questions

• imagine that they are members of a local religious community wishing to appoint a new leader, and to think about what sort of person might be ideal for the role

• enact role-play interviews with 'candidates' who have been given specific (though varied) identities.
