Using photos galleries for teaching: Writing captions
Theme: Photo galleries
Country: Global
Three children walk home

The following activity introduces caption writing into a lesson.

Writing captions enables students to learn:

- to use formal and impersonal language and concise expression to write effective captions

- tell a story by considering what the reader needs to know and include relevant details presented clearly

- to inform, explain and describe, focusing on conveying information and ideas clearly

- to understand/explore the relationship between captions and pictures

- to understand how images and words can be combined to convey meaning

Get students to think about the five W's - Who, What, Where, When and Why - when writing captions. They should try to answer each of the wh-questions to build up their story and give the reader the full picture.

Encourage students to include quotes. Quotes and personal opinions give another dimension to the captions.
