Assembly of the month: When the chips are down
Theme: sustainable development, farming, health
Country: Bolivia
Harvesting potatoes in Bolivia

Did you know that 2008 is the Year of the Potato?

In the UK and Ireland we eat potatos in all different shapes and forms - roasted, mashed, chips, crisps - and they are an important part of most people's diet.

But for many in Bolivia, potatoes are their main source of food and vital for survival.

15 year old Adela Calla eats up to 15 potatoes a day - for breakfast, lunch and dinner. With a bit of expert help from Christian Aid partner CIPE, Adela and her family have been able to grow other vegetables as well as potatoes and now have a more balanced diet.

This assembly explores the issues of sustainable farming and how a little bit of help - and a worm or two - can make a huge difference to communities.

Coming soon: classroom activities to complement this assembly will be added in time for use at Harvest.
