Using photo galleries for teaching: A photo tells a thousand words
Theme: Photo galleries
Country: India, Kenya
A boy beats a drum as part of a procession
The following activity gets students to look at how a photo can tell a story. Students should also discuss and learn that a photo can tell a particular story from a certain perspective, just from the way it has been photographed.

Look at some photos and ask students to discuss the following questions:

What is happening in this photo?

Who are the people involved?

What might have happened before this photo was taken?

What might have happened after this photo was taken?

How are the people related or connected?

What emotions are portrayed?

What may have happened outside the frame of the photo?

Who is the audience?

Is this an action shot?

What message does it give?

Is this a good photo? Why?

Discuss different camera angles - eye level, high angle (where the person/object seems small) and low angle (where the person/object seems large). Ask: Which one has the greatest impact? Why?
