Using photo galleries for teaching: Introducing a topic

The following activity shows how you can use photo galleries in your teaching.

Whole class teaching via a projector or an interactive whiteboard.

Display photos for discussion. Ask questions about the photos, like:

Where do you think this photo was taken?

Where do you think the people/child live?

What is happening in the photo?

What are they doing in the photo?

What kind of work do they do?

Discuss setting, appearance, body language, postures, camera angles, perspective, etc.

After discussion, read the captions to the class. Expand on and give explanation of any difficult words. You may wish to modify the caption to fit the age group of your class.

Classwork. Students look at the photo galleries independently in an ICT lesson and answer questions/do an activity based on the photos. You could create a worksheet using some of the questions listed above. Students could discuss the photos with a partner.
